Vania Chan

Vania is an acrobat and Stott certified Pilates instructor. Her energy, imagination, tenacity, and hypermobility are what drew her to the circus arts. She began training in Pilates when she could no longer simply work through her pain. She came to a point of either giving up the circus arts that she loves or rehabilitating to be able to train and perform again. Despite her innate flexibility and athletic background, Vania struggled enormously with Pilates because it concerns exactly what she’s not naturally good at: stability, coordination, proprioception, listening to verbal cues and translating that into movement, and accessing  deeper body awareness and vulnerability. Dedicating time to learn weaker pathways gave her practice and daily life much more dimension and depth. While there is redundancy in the body, we optimize success and promote sustainability/ resilience if we cultivate the ability to recruit deep, small, often underutilized, stabilizing muscles to accomplish a task rather than solely doing all the work from our global mobilizers that are often superficial and large and thereby setting ourselves up for burnout and injury. Beyond the physical benefits, Pilates balanced out Vania’s personality by bringing out the underbelly of her personality– which is concentration and a love for details. In movement and character, Vania values integrity. Despite not being a natural at Pilates, she was encouraged to become an instructor herself because struggling often gives you the experience to help others get beyond their own blocks in practice. Learning unfolds gradually and often in an unpredictable way. There will be times to question, examine, and analyze, as well as times to notice, then let go and maybe laugh. She believes that teaching in itself is a continual learning experience. Vania tends to come off either as overly serious or zany; her explanations about joint alignment and muscle patterning and why they matter are sometimes interspersed with imaginative cues. Before becoming a Pilates instructor, Vania also had careers in ecology and immigrant community work. In her circus life, Vania mostly trains tumbling and contortion and is a healthier and more skilled acrobat because she was willing to revise her movement strategies with patience, adapt in respect to what her body is willing to offer her moment by moment, and know she is not scarce on time to learn and develop. She finds enormous satisfaction in revisiting simple movements and positions to refine and deepen her practice. She draws from other methods as well to enhance her goals. Vania was diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome/ Generalized Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder– which explains much of her struggles with unstable joints and makes keeping up with a Pilates practice and education vital to her well-being and in regard to her athletic and artistic dreams.
Vania

Vania is a wonderful Pilates instructor. She creates a comfortable environment where everyone can feel supported. I appreciate that she listens to her students and incorporates their feedback into each session. Whether adjusting the exercises or offering helpful modifications, Vania’s thoughtful approach and attention to detail make each class enjoyable and accessible for all levels.

Working at a desk, on a computer for long hours, I’ve had chronic pain in my neck and shoulder. I have tried exercise, physical therapy, but those didn’t help with my posture and pain always came back.
My friend recommended that I try Pilates, but I was afraid to do so since I was stiff and didn’t know how to move my body properly. But after a couple of private classes I realized that those were the exact reasons why I should keep doing Pilates!
Now it’s been a few years, my shoulder/neck pain got so much better. My body awareness got better and I do have more control over my movement. My friends and family noticed first; they ask how I improved my posture so much!
Vania helped me with the journey so kindly and patiently! She went through all the details of body and muscle movement, and it was really helpful, especially when I don’t have a good sense of my body. She’s such an attentive and dedicated trainer! I highly recommend Vania and VIM Pilates to anyone who is looking to take care of their body and life!

Vania is an excellent Pilates instructor. I was in town for a few days and seeking relief for my neck and back pain. Vania quickly responded to my requests and scheduled sessions during my short trip to Boston. Vania showed great patience and immense compassion towards me as I was  struggling with processing verbal instruction and my proprioception. Vania listened to my concerns and assessed my needs thoughtfully. We did work on the reformer and on the exercise ball. I noticed great improvements with my breathing and openness in my chest, back and lungs. The pain eased as I stayed consistent with the exercises at home. Vania demonstrates a wealth of knowledge and incredible insight on how Pilates can help me. She also shared her resources and classes that I would learn more about this particular Pilates practice for myself. I am very grateful to have been instructed by Vania, an all around amazing human being.

I have greatly benefited from my work with Vania and highly recommend her Pilates classes to anyone, including beginners or people new to exercise. Her teaching has really helped my posture and understanding of my body and spine, such that I feel better in my body. Working with her over time, I learned more about how to hold my body in space. Vania is also very open to questions and feedback. She has encouraged me and I appreciate her teaching.
