Running is certainly not Jess’ punishment. In fact, long distance running has given Jess a lot of great things so far in life — a full cross country and track scholarship to Boston University, opportunities to race around the world, the chance to meet her husband and most importantly peace of mind.

Plagued by six stress fractures and back surgery for a herniated disc, Jess needed to find a mode of cross training that allowed her to keep pursuing her passion. Jess started lifting weights and taking group exercise classes, and her body took note. Not only did the weight work help with her bone health and muscle imbalances, but it gave her a new perspective on how to approach running, and working out in general. Not so shockingly, it’s all about balance.
Today, Jess alternates her runs on the street with high-intensity interval training and low-weight, lots-of-reps strength work in the gym, and (knock on wood) hasn’t had a stress fracture in years. And this is exactly how she trains her clients and structures her classes in an effort to build endurance and long, lean muscles. She was inspired by a few instructors who showed her working out inside can be fun too, and wants to help VIM members of all fitness levels to learn to yearn to sweat as much she does.
Although she takes her health and exercise goals seriously, she certainly doesn’t take herself as such. A goofball at heart, a lover of giant portions, bad TV, sweatpants, Thanksgiving, kissing dogs’ noses and thinking she’s funnier than she really is, Jess hopes you come to personal training sessions or her Bootcamp classes ready to sweat, to laugh and to put in some good old fashioned hard work.
