Running is certainly not Jess’ punishment. In fact, long distance running has given Jess a lot of great things so far in life — a full cross country and track scholarship to Boston University, opportunities to race around the world, the chance to meet her husband and most importantly peace of mind.

But a healthy habit doesn’t always mean a healthy body. Plagued by six stress fractures and back surgery for a herniated disc, Jess needed to find a mode of cross training that allowed her to keep pursuing her passion. Jess started lifting weights and taking group exercise classes, and her body took note. Not only did the weight work help with her bone health and muscle imbalances, but it gave her a new perspective on how to approach running, and working out in general. Not so shockingly, it’s all about balance.

Today, Jess alternates her runs on the street with high-intensity interval training and low-weight, lots-of-reps strength work in the gym, and (knock on wood) hasn’t had a stress fracture in years. And this is exactly how she trains her clients and structures her classes in an effort to build endurance and long, lean muscles. She was inspired by a few instructors who showed her working out inside can be fun too, and wants to help VIM members of all fitness levels to learn to yearn to sweat as much she does.

Although she takes her health and exercise goals seriously, she certainly doesn’t take herself as such. A goofball at heart, a lover of giant portions, bad TV, sweatpants, Thanksgiving, kissing dogs’ noses and thinking she’s funnier than she really is, Jess hopes you come to personal training sessions or her Bootcamp classes ready to sweat, to laugh and to put in some good old fashioned hard work.

The long run puts the tiger in the cat.”

I started working out with Jess in early 2016 in an effort to get back into shape after a few years of actively avoiding the gym. A few colleagues from work mentioned that they took BootcampX and that the class was really tough but the instructor, Jess, was really great. They were right on both accounts and I can still recall how good I felt after having been away from exercise for such a long time. I made a decision after that class to sign up for personal training sessions with Jess because I knew she would keep me motivated, challenged and more importantly accountable. It’s been over a year and a half and I still regularly work out with Jess because each session feels uniquely tailored to fit my current level of fitness, my personal fitness goals  and my physical limitations. Her background in competitive sports is evident as she comes to each session with a well-organized plan so that the client gets the most out of each work out.”

Beyond being a talented trainer and instructor, Jess brings a lot of her own energy and enthusiasm to her classes making working out fun. Okay, perhaps not fun but funner.

A few things you should know about Jess before you take one of her classes:

1. Be prepared to hear the word “yay!”. A lot.

2. Be prepared to sweat (but not as much as Jess).

3. Be prepared to get to class early to get a good spot.

4. Be prepared to feel sore (but good) the next day. And the day after that.

5. Be prepared to get hooked.

Take a class or better yet, train with her. You will not regret it.

News & Events

“I very much enjoyed my membership with VIM. I have to say that the highlight of my experience was personal training and small group training with Valerie. She was extremely committed to my success and helped me establish an effective goal plan. I saw incredible progress with her (I lost 10 pounds) and I am stronger, happier and healthier. I also really enjoyed her style for leading small group and yoga classes. It is clear she is passionate about this work and dedicated to her clients.”-Ani
